This is an airplane. Its wings hold it up, and its engines push it forward. Up we go to the clouds!

Parts

Fuselage
The fuselage is the long body of the plane. We sit inside it, and the round windows show us the clouds.
Wings
The wings are wide and flat, like two big bird wings. They hold the plane up, so it does not fall down.
One wing
One wing is like a bird wing, with curved bones inside that hold it up. It is light and strong, and the wind lifts it.
Flap
The flap is the little piece at the back of the wing that can move. It slides back and makes the wing wider, so the plane can fly slowly.
Engines
The engines hang under the wings, and they are the big muscles of the plane. They push the plane forward, so it can fly.
Fan
There is a big fan at the front of the engine, round like a hand fan. When it spins, it pulls the air inside.
Turbine
The turbine hides inside the engine, like a row of little windmills. It spins very fast, and that power pushes the plane forward.
Tail
The tail is at the back of the plane. It keeps the plane flying straight, so it does not wobble about.
Tail fin
The tail fin stands up at the back, like a little flag. When the plane starts to drift, the fin helps it point straight again.
Elevator
The elevator sits at the back of the tail, and it tips gently up and down. When it tips up, the nose of the plane lifts up too.
Landing gear
The landing gear is under the plane's tummy, with lots of strong wheels. When the plane comes down, the wheels touch the ground first.

See how it works

Take off

  1. The plane rolls onto the runway, and the flaps slide back. The wings get wider, all ready to hold the plane up.
  2. Inside the engines, the big fans spin fast and pull in air. Then the turbines spin too, pushing the plane forward.
  3. The plane goes faster and faster, and the wheels lift off the ground. The nose tips up, and up we go into the sky!

Slow down

  1. The flaps slide back along the wing, and the wing gets wider. Now it holds the plane up even better, so the ride stays smooth.
  2. From above, both wings look a little wider. The plane is flying slowly now, getting ready to come down.

Land

  1. The plane floats gently down, and the flaps slide out a little more. The wider wing lets the plane fly slowly.
  2. The landing gear reaches out from under the plane's tummy, with all its wheels hanging ready. They are about to touch the ground.
  3. The wheels touch the runway first and roll along. The plane rolls slower and slower, and then it stops, safe and still.
