We live on the Earth, a big round ball in space. It is made of layers, one wrapped around the next, and the middle is the hottest part. Tap it and look inside!

Parts

Rocky layer
This is the rocky layer we live on. It is thin and cool, and it holds up our houses and our trees.
Thick hot layer
Under the rocky layer is the thickest layer of all. It is so hot that the rock goes soft, and it creeps along very slowly.
Hot metal
Deeper down there is a ball of hot metal that flows and swirls. It never stops moving, and that makes the Earth a big invisible magnet.
Hot middle
Right in the middle of the Earth is the hottest place of all. It is squeezed so hard that it stays solid, and it is just a little smaller than the Moon.
Air blanket
All around the Earth is a thin blanket of air. The air we breathe, the clouds and the wind all live in it.

See how it works

Peel

  1. The layer we live on is thin, like the skin of an apple. Peel it gently away and look underneath.
  2. Now the thickest layer of all is showing. It is hot and soft, like warm dough, so peeling it takes a bit of pulling.
  3. Right in the middle are two metal layers. The outer one flows like water, and the middle one is squeezed into a small hard ball.

Spin

  1. The Earth is always turning round and round. One whole turn takes one day, and we turn with it, so we never feel it move.
  2. The blanket of air turns with the Earth too. The clouds and the wind ride along and go all the way round.

Compare sizes

  1. The layer we live on is as thin as a skin. If we could see right through it, we would find the tiny hot middle hiding deep inside.
  2. Now we can see the sizes. The hot soft layer is the thickest, the two metal layers are much smaller, and the layer we live on is thinnest of all.
