Parts

Base frame
The base frame is the flat bottom of the truck, and the four wheels bolt onto it. The cab and the ladder sit on top, and it holds them all together.
Cab
The cab is where the driver sits, with a big window in front. A big window means the driver can see the road clearly.
Ladder
The ladder is made of sections that slide out longer and longer, and it lies flat on the roof. When it stands up, the water can reach high into the air.
Turntable
The turntable is the round base under the ladder, and it can turn. When it turns, the ladder swings around to point the right way.
Support legs
The support legs slide out from both sides of the truck, and each one has a flat foot. They press down on the ground so the truck stays steady when the ladder stands up.
Water tank
The water tank is the big can on the truck, and it holds a whole load of water. The water waits in here until the pump pulls it out.
Water pump
Inside the pump there is a little wheel with blades, and it spins very fast. As it spins, it pulls water from the tank and pushes it into the hose.
Hose
The hose is a long thick tube, coiled up in a roll, with a metal coupling at the end. It clips onto the pump, and the water runs along it.
Lights
A row of lights sits on the roof, red on one side and blue on the other. They flash on and off to tell everyone the truck is coming, so please make room.

See how it works

Siren

  1. The lights on the roof switch on and flash, on and off. They tell everyone the truck is on its way.
  2. The lights spin round and round, and the siren sings out. The sound rolls away down the street, very far.
  3. The red and blue lights keep turning, and the sound keeps going. Cars up ahead hear it and pull over to make a wide gap.

Pump water

  1. The water in the tank is pulled into the pump. Inside, the little wheel with blades spins so fast you can hardly see it.
  2. The water leaves the pump and runs into the hose. The hose swells up, round and full of water.
  3. The water shoots out of the open end and spreads into a wide fan. That is how the water gets where it needs to go.

Raise the ladder

  1. The turntable turns, and the ladder slowly tips up. It points the way it needs to go.
  2. The ladder slides out section by section, higher and higher. The support legs hold the truck steady, so the water can go up very high.
