Sunflower

This is a sunflower. Its roots drink water from the soil, its stem stands up tall, and one big flower opens on top. Tap it and see how that flower makes seeds!

Parts

Roots

The roots grow at the very bottom, thin and tangled like little threads. They drink water from the soil and hold the plant up so it does not fall over.

Stem

The stem stands between the roots and the leaves and holds the whole plant up. The water the roots drink travels up inside it, all the way to the top.

Leaves

The leaves are big and wide, like little fans. They take in sunlight and air and make food for the whole plant.

Flower

This is the flower, with petals all around the outside and a soft middle. After the petals drop, seeds grow in that middle.

Petals

The petals ring the middle in a bright yellow circle. Their colour calls the bees to come and visit.

Seeds

Row upon row of seeds grow in the middle, and every seed has thin stripes. Ripe seeds can be eaten, or planted to grow new sunflowers.

Seed head

When the seeds are ripe, the middle becomes a round head packed with them. The petals drop off, and the heavy head bends down low.
