Parts

Body
The body is the thick main part of the rocket. The pointy nose and the fins hold on to it, and inside it sit the fuel tank and the engine.
Nose cone
The nose cone is the pointy top of the rocket, smooth to touch. It splits the air gently, so the rocket slips along.
Stage
A stage is one piece of the rocket, with its own fuel tank and engine. The tank sits above and the engine below, so the stage can push the rocket up on its own.
Fuel tank
The fuel tank holds the fuel, and the fuel is the rocket's power. A pipe carries it down to the engine.
Engine
The engine sits at the bottom, wide like a big bell. It lights the fuel and pushes flame down out of its mouth, so the rocket is pushed up.
Fins
Four triangle fins sit at the bottom of the rocket. They lean on the air and keep the rocket flying straight, without tipping over.
Booster
A slim booster is strapped to each side of the rocket, and it carries its own fuel. It pushes along at the start, so the rocket has plenty of power to go up.

Countdown

  1. A round little window on the rocket lights up yellow. That means the rocket is ready.
  2. A small valve above the engine opens, and a wisp of white mist floats out. The rocket is making its last checks.
  3. It is nearly time to go, and the rocket stands still and waits. Small yellow lights come on along the fins and the boosters.

Lift off

  1. The engine lights, and a bright flame shoots down from its wide mouth. The flame pushes down, so the rocket starts to rise.
  2. The flame grows strong and steady. The rocket lifts off its place and climbs straight up.
  3. The rocket leans slowly onto its side and flies up and away. All the way up, it keeps pushing flame out behind it.

Drop boosters

  1. The boosters use up all their fuel. Then they let go of the rocket and slip away below.
  2. Now the rocket is much lighter. It still has its own fuel tank and engine, so it keeps on flying up.
